Reign of Winter — Game Session — 087

Game summary for November 27, 2018, Reign of Winter campaign, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Phoenix Gaming Club. Session included: Deska Starseeker (Half-Elf Druid played by Kaliegh Averdick), Magnus Erlingsson (Human Cleric played by Chris Harmon), and Tulvur Xandersen (Troglodyte Fighter played by Taylor Averdick). Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

While waiting for the wall of force to drop, Magnus cast disrupting weapon.  The team then charged out and killed the two baykoks still standing around watching them.  They went into the next room and found a holding cell where it appears people had been tortured in the past.  Next, they looked out a window overlooking a massive chamber.  They realized it was a throne room, and in the throne sat an ice-encased skeletal figure!  The group jumped or rappelled down the ten feet to the floor which awakened Queen Bremagyr!  She came rushing forward firing a polar ray into Magnus, and the team charged to meet her.

The team landed several blows and were amazed by the Queen’s resilience against their attacks.  She then ripped into the team cause several to burst into blightfire!  As the mystic fires burned, the Queen recovered from her injuries!  Shatha was devastated by the fires and driven to the back.  Tulvur stood his ground by suffered grievous wounds that would have felled a lesser troglodyte.  Deska used the cauldron of overwhelming allies to fill the room with large and huge fire elementals!  She and Magnus then fired off numerous flame strikes, some of which were dispelled by the Queen’s spell resistance.  Tulvur’s sword, Icebiter, proved effective due to its flaming properties.

The Queen’s frigid cold aura continued to harm the elementals, but there were so many they landed enough blows to keep her moving back.  Soon several of the team were suffering from blightfire, and their life force flowed freely into the Queen!  Magnus channeled positive energy and blasted her after he identified her as a winter wight.  Then, Tulvur critically hit her with Icebiter, which rocked her backwards.  Deska finished her off with a beautifully-timed fire snake!

The group nursed some wounds and claimed her crown.  Deska noticed it was just a cheap trinket though, so they searched in earnest and found a hidden chamber overhead.  Within lay a fortune in gold, jewels, and magic!  Amidst the items, they found the real crown, and Deska put it on her head.  She immediately received a vision of her holding up Mametqul’s head with the crown upon it, and she placed it upon a shelf in the cabinet in the back of his tent.

Reign of Winter — Game Session — 086

Game summary for November 13, 2018, Reign of Winter campaign, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Phoenix Gaming Club. Session included: Baknarla (Adlet Shaman Ranger played by Shane Bradley), Erris (Arctic Elf Bloodrager played by Casey Scruggs), Magnus Erlingsson (Human Cleric played by Chris Harmon), and Tarik (Human Bard played by Andrew Renfrow). Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

The party moved around and opened another door leading to a short stairway.  At the top, a quartet of baykoks awaited and attacked!  Baknarla was struck and paralyzed and dragged out of the way by Greta.  Magnus cast a maximized flame strike up the stairs and hurt the enemy badly.  Erris tried to acrobatically charge up the stairs but didn’t quite succeed.  The baykoks unleashed volleys of arrows into him while Erris began inspiring the team.  A second flame strike helped put an end to that encounter.

Once up the stairs, the team searched the room and found a burlap sack full of loot beneath a loose flagstone.  They chose one of the two doors and found a room filled with mud and muck.  Baknarla nudged it, and three omox demons rose up to attack!  At the same time, half a dozen baykoks came up behind them!  Tarik walled off the baykoks with a wall of force while Baknarla and Erris moved into the room with the demons.  The demons filled the room with acid fog, which inhibited vision, movement, and dealt acid damage.

Magnus tried to cast blade barrier through the wall of force and ended up with the blades on his own side!  Slashed badly by his own spell, he had to fall back.  Tarik began dispelling the fog, but the demons kept bringing it back.  One omox tried to suffocate Erris but was slain by Baknarla.  Greta frantically began healing party members.  Magnus cast prayer on the party and moved in.  A combination of various acid resisting spells helped turn the tide and allowed the team to vanquish the demons!

Reign of Winter — Game Session — 085

Game summary for November 6, 2018, Reign of Winter campaign, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Phoenix Gaming Club. Session included: Baknarla (Adlet Shaman Ranger played by Shane Bradley), Deska Starseeker (Half-Elf Druid played by Kaliegh Averdick), Erris (Arctic Elf Bloodrager played by Casey Scruggs), Tarik (Human Bard played by Andrew Renfrow), and Tulvur Xandersen (Troglodyte Fighter played by Taylor Averdick). Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

The team entered a large vaulted room filled with horrid fleshy lemure devils toiling away to help a red-skinned pit hag cage swarms of hellwasps.  The devils oozed toward the doors as the party appeared, and the hag began using magic to open the hellwasp cages.  Baknarla hurled a grenade into the room, but by the time it exploded, many of the devils were pressed into the doorway and out of harm’s way.  The hag hurled a fireball out the door and hit everyone.  The hellwasps began flying about stinging anyone and everyone, including the devils.  The pain of the stings caused some of the team to become nauseous from pain, and Shatha was injected with a powerful poison.

The group found the lemures easy targets, but their numbers kept the party from advancing effectively.  Shatha breathed ice, Greta cast cone of cold, and Deska unleashed a barrage of flame strikes.  Both sides activated walls of fire to divide the battlefield into what became a raging inferno.  Fortunately, several of the party warded themselves with resist energy.  Erris got caught up in a couple of swarms, which slowed his advance.  Tarik hit the hag, and several allies, with a shout.  It successfully deafened the hag but also Baknarla!  Tulvur and Erris found their weapon attacks against the hellwasps completely ineffective.  Baknarla kept pressure on the hag, driving her slowly back.  She hit most of the team with waves of fatigue and then affected Tarik with crushing despair.  The poor bard also got nauseated and poisoned by hellwasps.  The team continued making progress, though.  Then, Shatha succumbed to poison and fell over paralyzed!  Tarik stumbled about close to doing the same.  The hag was struck down, and the swarms were either destroyed or driven off.  Finally, as the team stood in a heap of stinking lemure flesh, Baknarla’s grenades exploded due to her standing in the wall of fire!  Several of the team were blasted with concussive force.  However, the group was able to recover their wits and use some restorative ointment to remove poison from Shatha and Tarik.

Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

A flash of light illuminated more trees.  Miles and miles of trees.  The occasional raindrop splattered upon the van’s windshield, one of the few sounds other than the infrequent rattle of handcuff chains.  It was late, close to midnight, and there were still many miles to go on this prisoner transport.  The police escort pulled off several miles back with a flat tire.  A sheriff’s deputy was supposed to meet up with the van a few miles up ahead until the escort could catch back up.  Boredom set in, and several of the inmates were talking to fill the time.  Gary and Ken made it pretty clear they were planning to run a tight, and maybe somewhat abusive, ship on this run.  Dale and Monty were handcuffed together, and Aspen was handcuffed to herself.

Distant thunder rumbled again.  As the vehicle crested a hill, the lights of a service station came into view.  It appeared to have four pumps, and the interior looked like it may include some kind of small grocery or gift shop.

Suddenly, an injured deer hurtled into the road.  It moved awkwardly, and there was blood on its fur.  It appeared to move directly toward the van, and there was no time to avoid it!  The van smashed into the animal as the driver swerved drastically.  Glass shattered, the van fish tailed, and on this hill, the vehicle flipped and rolled sending people bouncing all around!

Bits of splattered deer gore rained across one of the pumps, and the van skidded to a stop with a crash up against the curb by the pumps.  Another ten feet or so, and it would have slammed into them!

Gary went into the service station to call for help while Ken helped the prisoners out of the wreckage.  There did not appear to be an attendant, so Gary used the phone behind the counter and spoke with a 911 dispatcher who said a sheriff’s deputy should be there soon.  He came back out, and they took the prisoners into the station.

This was a small and modern-ish service station.  You would guess it was built within the last 30 years or so.  Moths flit about old fluorescent lights in the overhang covering four pumps.  At some point, this station installed modern pumps with credit card readers.  It appeared two of the pumps also had diesel options.  A big ice cooler sat outside the doors alongside a cage containing five propane tanks for grills.  The front and side of the building were mostly glass windows, and it appeared there was currently a sale on Mudlight beer.  The front door was a swinging glass door with a metal push bar on the back side.  Through the windows you could see a fairly average store filled with coolers for drinks, chips and other junk food, and the penguin logo for the Chillee frozen drink line.  Looked like they have cherry and cola.  Cigarettes were in a glass case behind the register, but they do not see an attendant.

Inside, the inmates begged to be uncuffed, especially Aspen who complained she could not pee while cuffed.  They refused, so Aspen squatted at Gary’s feet and peed everywhere!  He shoved her over.  She then opened the bathroom door.  Something terrible had happened in this tiny restroom.  Droplets of blood spattered the mirror, sink, urinal, and toilet.  The torn body of a young man lay in a heap before the toilet.  He wore a smock or vest with the gas station logo on it.  Some kind of black fuzz or hair covered his skin, and it twitched as if blown by a breeze.  With a sickening sound, the man’s body lurched upward and scuttled toward the door awkwardly, using a leg, an arm, and its head as limbs.  The other arm and leg reached out eagerly!

They slammed the door shut and fell back.  They ran toward the front of the store, and the head of the deer they hit along with one leg had crawled up the door and was trying to get through!  It too was covered in strange spikey black spines and thrashed against the door as the group locked it.  Gary and Ken found flashlights and batteries, but they were in blister packs. They went to the office and found a box knife and razor blades, one of which Aspen stole.  Ken then began flashing the inmates in the eyes with his flashlight as some kind of intimidation tactic.

The group decided to go through the storeroom and out the back.  There, they found a very small German Smart car.  Ken uncuffed Dale and Monty so Monty could try and hotwire the car. The used a flashlight to shatter the window.  A grunt, a roar, perhaps a shriek?  Some terrible sound rent the night air, and the bushes along the woods rattled and crashed.  A black-furred creature, a bear, emerged from the tree line and emitted that same sound.  The bear seemed worse for wear.  Its fur was matted and bloody, and it spasmed and jerked as it moved.  Black spines or quills quivered in the air poking out from open wounds.  Its gait was strange and alien, and it lurched forward quickly, the sound of bones grinding the wrong directions crackling with each movement.

Dale, Gary, and Ken climbed the ladder on the back of the building to the roof while Aspen and Monty fled back into the station.  Inside, Monty picked the locks on Aspen’s handcuffs.  Somehow, this strange bear beast climbed the ladder to the roof!  Gary and Ken tried to throw Dale to it but failed.  A scuffle ensued, and the bear caught Gary and ripped him in half!  It threw his upper torso off the building, and it seemed to merge with his legs as tendrils burst out of its flesh and tissue to plunge into Gary’s.  Ken did a fireman’s drop down the ladder and found a mountain of a man, Moose, down at the bottom.  Dale quickly joined them.  In a panic, they burst through the door which slammed into Monty and caused him to fall forward and impale himself upon a piece of rebar she had picked up.  Suddenly, a female hiker came running out of the woods as well.  The group gathered back inside the station.

They tried to get the keys from the body in the restroom and were attacked.  The hand got severed and scuttled about until the group could catch it in a giant cheese puffs container.  Out front, the sheriff’s deputy arrived and was brutally killed by the bear thing which then incorporated her body as well.  As if that were not enough, the top half of Gary animated with the same black infestation!  It began pounding on the windows.  The group made a run for the deputy’s car, got in, but the bear landed on it, damaging it badly, and then the team managed to get out and back into the station before an explosion rocked the outside.

Next, the group used fire to keep the one in the bathroom at bay long enough to steal the keys to the Smart car.  They sent Amanda and Aspen for help.  Meanwhile, Ken, Moose, and Dale went into the station and went to hide in the office until they smelled smoke.  They opened the back door and were attacked by the bear creature, and Moose was bitten on the ankle.  Then, with an ambulance they had found at a crash site overrun with these monsters, Aspen and Amanda returned, driving backwards trying to avoid the bear.  The group was able to get into the ambulance, and they sped off into the night back toward the prison.

Inside the ambulance, they learned Moose’s leg as infected, so Dale amputated.  Then, a storm came upon them causing a tree to block the road.  Dale decided to inject himself with adrenaline and rushed out to move the tree.  In the attempt, he was struck dead by lightning!  The group carefully took the ambulance off road and went around the fallen tree.  The spoke with the prison with the radio, but by the time they got there, things look suspicious, so they by-passed and drove to What, Oklahoma.

There, they found a hospital and went inside.  Moose was taken immediately to the ER.  Ken, Aspen, and Amanda were questioned by an officer, and they learned a teenager may be infected in the E.R.  Investigating, they learned he was and had infected numerous doctors.  It then infected the questioning officer!  Aspen used hairspray and a lighter to burn him and the body of the teen.  He opened fire and shot and killed Moose as he hobbled around the corner on his crutches.

The team ran out as chaos descended upon the hospital.  They jumped in the ambulance alongside a man named Franklin.  He instantly started hitting on Aspen and Amanda.  They all agreed to go to his house for guns.  Once there, they learned he didn’t have many useful things there, and they were attacked by his infected cat!  In the scuffle, Amanda sacrificed herself to save the rest.  Aspen accidentally discovered hairspray kills the black stuff.  A call to the CDC later, and the team became the heroes of the country and their cure was spread in usage across the nation!

The team quickly healed themselves and rushed into the room once again.  The baykoks had gone back up to the balcony, and the team found themselves under fire.  Deska summoned a triceratops and four woolly rhinoceroses into the fray!  Svala unleashed a barrage a sharded axes while Tarik used spider climb to ascend to the balcony.  Tulvur and Shatha flew about and unleashed carnage with Icebiter and Shatha’s frosty breath weapon!  Baknarla rushed in and hit several of the creatures with a grenade scavenged from the Russian soldiers days before.  Magnus took to the air using air step and brought his blade to bear against the undead.  The combined carnage of the rampaging herd of dinosaurs and rhinos and the onslaught brought by the team was too much for the baykoks, especially after several turned on each other thanks to Tarik’s song of discord.  In a few moments, the team defeated them and then fortified the area and used magic to hide a campsite within.

Reign of Winter — Game Session — 083

Game summary for October 16, 2018, Reign of Winter campaign, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Phoenix Gaming Club. The baykoks in the chamber unleashed a barrage of arrows at Magnus, injuring him badly.  Erris scooped up Deska’s bones into his backpack.  Koshi was paralyzed by a baykok arrow and fell into the water.  Tarik inspired greatness and cast song of discord on a group of baykoks, causing them to fall into battle with one another!  Soon the warsworn and baykoks were fighting among themselves.  Magnus fell unconscious from arrows, and Greta carried him out.  Erris then slammed the doors shut.

Greta revived Magnus who then healed himself.  The team layered buff spells like haste and good hope while the baykoks and warsworn finished fighting.  The warsworn then trampled the party.  The last baykok was cut down out of the sky while Koshi hit the warsworn with a fireball and Tarik hit with shout.  Greta put a baneweapon on Magnus’ sword.  He then charged the warsworn and killed it!  The team then used a scroll to remove the negative levels from Greta before planning to get back into the fortress to face the other 10 baykoks.

The team rushed the fortress, and Magnus flew up to the gate house where he was attacked by an Abyssal retriever!  He proceeded to critically hit it with his holy sword!  Several of the team flew up, including Tulvur and Shatha, with Svala carried in the dragon’s claws.  Svala was dropped on the roof where he finished off the retriever!

The team saw the flooded inner courtyard and floating bodies.  They flew over to a landing and were attacked from behind by a massive warsworn, a conglomeration of dead bodies into one mass!  The monster began beating Greta and draining levels.  Baknarla dropped a sleet storm on it so the team could slip through the doors and get away.  Tulvur spurred Shatha into the air, and they charged blindly into the sleet where they eventually crashed into the wall!  Koshi tried to punch down the doors, which rang out like a bell.

The team began throwing themselves against the door trying to break free the rust.  Deska assumed swarm skin and skittered in as a swarm of army ants and began breaking free rust.  The team struggled and struggled against the door as Greta continued getting hit.  The noise brought the attention of four flying baykoks!  The creatures swooped in to attack as Magnus crashed through the doors carrying Greta.  He looked up at the balcony and found nearly a dozen more baykoks pointing their bows down at them!

Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

The team decided to fly to Queen Bremagyr’s fortress, and soon after taking flight they were attacked by a devourer riding on a nightwing nightshade!  The nightwing’s bite dispelled Koshi’s fly spell, and he fell to the ground.  The team swarmed in and cut the devourer down quickly, but the nightwing proved problematic with its spell resistance and high damage reduction.  Magnus cast holy sword, which proved particularly effective.  Erris hastened the team, and Deska unleashed a barrage of flame strikes  Tulvur and Greta rode on Shatha’s back and proved quite the team in landing serious melee blows.  The group suffered several hard hits but dropped the creatures just in time for another pair to arrive!  This pair stayed further back and used greater dispel magic to try and debuff the party.  Baknarla charged in and forced them to engage.  Deska unleashed more flame strikes, and Erris’ reach proved quite effective.  The nightwing killed Shatha and caused his corpse and all three riders to plunge to the ground.  Fortunately, Greta’s breath of life brought him back.  Deska bravely tried to use a heal as a touch attack but was killed in the attempt.  Magnus was able to recover her with breath of life as well while the team finished off the foes.

The weakened prison allowed the power of Baba Yaga to flow into the party, increasing their natural armor!  Vigliv re-emerged from the tree and told the team they needed to defeat Queen Bremagyr, a former servant of Baba Yaga who forgot her place.  Locked in her iron fortress of Vashliq, Bremagyr is being punished for her failures.  A portion of Baba Yaga’s power is still within the queen and can be used to further weaken the prison.

The empathic urging of Baba Yaga led them to the Canyon of the Drakes.  The group climbed up some cliffs and were attacked by half a dozen rift drakes!  The deadly dragons proved formidable with their razor jaws and exploding acidic spittle.  The team used magic to become aerially mobile and resistant to acid.  Erris flew out and fought in spectacular combat out over the canyon floor while Baknarla charged up the cliff to fight tooth-to-tooth with another drake.  Magnus hit several drakes with a maximized flame strike, and Koshi unleashed a lethal barrage of sling stones, sending one drake plummeting to its death.  Soon the team defeated the creatures and scaled to the top platform where they found a cave.

The group entered the cave and suddenly found themselves in a tent in another portion of the Dancing Hut!  Within the hut were six women serving a large demonic-looking div who introduced himself as Mametqul, servant of Baba Yaga.  The group talked for a while over coffee and learned he is an observer, witnessing Queen Bremagyr’s torture.  He revealed the frigid land beyond his tent, the fallen kingdom being slowly sucked into a whirling maelstrom of chaos!  He pointed out the iron fortress of Vashliq and told them to return with the queen’s crown, and he can send them back to Grandmother’s Cauldron.

As the team left, he muttered something about bats that Erris overheard.  He stuck his head back in the tent, and Mametqul warned them of enormous bats they may encountered along the way.

Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

The team spent a few moments healing themselves and then ascended the tower to find the three coffins containing the recuperating Brothers Three.  The group tore the boards off the windows and burned them all up in the sun!  With the domination broken, they could see out the windows the soldiers to begin coming to themselves and getting confused.

The party then ascended the stairs behind the World Engine and found numerous open nesting dolls with tiny screaming souls within attached via wires to a large nesting doll painted like a matronly woman.  The group surmised it is some kind of battery and disconnected it.  This caused a prismatic blast throughout the room, searing several of the team with energy.  Koshi, holding the doll, suddenly had empathic feels of anger, hope, excitement, and desire to return to the Dancing Hut.  An explosion rocked the church, and the team headed downstairs to find the World Engine exploded.  They searched the rubble and found several magical items including ring gates and a well of many worlds!  For a while, they debated how to move among the soldiers with Rasputin’s slain body.  Finally, Greta threw him on the ground and shaved his beard and hair.  They had already taken his robes, so he no longer appeared at all the same.

The group used their hats of disguise to go to retrieve Viktor and Anastasia.  They found her locked in closet and Viktor dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.  The group disguised her as well and walked right out the front gates with other soldiers wandering off.  They discovered several of the mystical guardians of the camp inert or dead.

When the team arrived at the Dancing Hut, it went wild with apparent excitement before finally letting them in.  Inside, the Coffin Man and Shatha were playing cards.  The daemon greeted Anastasia as “honored granddaughter.”  Koshi had a strong feeling to go “up”, and the group ascended through a trap door and found themselves in some kind of large ravine filled with mist and a dusting of snow.  A warm pool of water surrounded by ferns and trees lie nearby filled with the crashing fall of water from up above, causing numerous rainbows in the misty air.  An enormous tree rose up by the falls, and the team approached.

From within the tree, a norn appeared!  She introduced herself as Vigliv and claimed to be Baba Yaga’s mentor and ally.  She told the team to rescue Baba Yaga and save their world, they must destroy the nesting doll prison in which she is currently imprisoned.  She told them they would need to gather Baba Yaga’s fate, power, death, life, and blood.  No sooner did she tell them this than an enormous catoblepas attacked from the water!

Koshi stepped up and began wrestling with the beast as the team closed in and hit it with axe and sword.  The monster breathed toxic breath across the entire team, but thanks to their ongoing heroes’ feast, none were affected!  Koshi pinned the monster to the ground and began squeezing the life out of it as the barrage of blades continued to fall.  Quickly, Erris landed a killing blow.

Vigliv re-appeared and instructed Magnus to take a golden thread of fate and wrap it around the doll, dip both in the toxic blood of the beast, and wash them in the water of the pool.  Doing so infused Baba Yaga’s fate from the thread into her prison and caused one layer of the nesting doll to fall off!  Immediately, the team could all feel the empathic feelings of Baba Yaga, not just the person touching the doll.  Her prison had weakened!
