It was game session 24 of Age of Worms and my 200th game as Dungeon Master for this group. After consulting with Yellowknife in Daggerford, the party made haste back to Cromm’s Hold. They found the undead contained and debated strategy for a long time. Eventually, Lyrin used unseen servant to clear debris from the stairwell and grant access to the basement. As the party moved into the basement, things fell apart.

Finding the spawn of Kyuss, in their full glory, was a mind-shattering event of terrifying proportions. Several of the party members could not handle the supernatural fear and ran screaming about the basement in blind panic. While they ran about, the spawn covered them in worms which began eating into their brains. Evo had made an effective use of a necklace of fireballs (hitting the enemy and allies, however) and tried to follow it with a melee attack with a flask of alchemist’s fire (the first time that tactic has been used, anywhere, to my knowledge). Sadly, he succumbed to the fear and dropped the flask on himself.

Grot, despite the worm in his body, managed to injure the spawn and bring one down. Lyrin came in with spells a-blazin’ and laid out the other two. The party regrouped on the main floor, and Camthalion (who had numerous worms in him) fell face first onto the floor. Morak extracted a worm from Grot’s skull with his dagger. After a short while, Evo went over to dig the worms out of Cam with his dagger and found the great elf had died!

The entire party looked on in horror as Cam’s eyes burst and worms boiled up from within his brain, pouring out of his empty sockets, mouth and nose. Hands flew to weapons as his corpse sat upright in their midst…

Lunchtime Dungeons & Dragons

Here’s an interesting “journal” of the events at a Wizards of the Coast lunchtime Dungeons & Dragons game DMed by Mike Mearls. How, in an hour, they have the time to make any progress is beyond me. But, they do it. Interesting. See the details here.

Game session 23 of Age of Worms is complete. After slaying the lizard king, Redeye, the party followed Hishka through a submerged tunnel and attacked a group of kobolds loyal to Ilthane. They then waded into a pool filled with hundreds of lizardfolk eggs in order to examine the black dragon egg also present. When Lyrin touched the egg, it cracked and fell apart, spilling hundreds of short green worms into the water. Hishka went hysterical and began grabbing up eggs and carrying them out of the water. The party dove in with him, snatching eggs as quickly as they could move.

The worms churned the water as they moved about, and as the group watched, worms burrowed into the lizardfolk eggs near them. Within a few moments, the eggs began hatching and half-formed lizardfolk spawn swam forth with worms bursting from the flesh, nostrils and eye sockets. Lyrin succeeded in destroying many of the worms with a fireball but also destroyed several lizardfolk eggs. Valgen recovered a submerged chest and drug it to shore, and then he and Zebaum entered the pool and snatched up several of the half-formed spawn. They took the creatures and had Grot bash them to bits.

The lizardfolk were overjoyed that the group saved so many of their eggs; Hishka even ran about kissing party members. The group opened the chest to find some magical items and a small fortune in coins. They then gathered up Marzena and the other refugees and headed back to Cromm’s Hold.

At the Hold, the party found that some kind of undead creature was trapped in the basement and it had claimed two others to join it. Undaunted, Grot and Valgen began pulling the barrier out of the way. One of the creatures slipped its arm through and tossed some small green worms onto Grot, which quickly disappeared under his armor. The group began putting the barrier back in place as Grot began thrashing about in pain and desperately ripping at his armor. The dwarf screamed and clutched his head in agony as the worms burrowed through his flesh and into his brain. Zebaum and Morak drew daggers and performed a crude extraction. Although badly injured, Grot survived with the aid of Beardfist’s divine prayers and Camthalion’s use of the perpetual talisman.

The team helped further barricade the area and told the residents of the Hold they would return in two days after traveling to Daggerford to consult Yellowknife for a solution. Once there, they find that Yellowknife knew little more than they but recommended they seek out an old ally of his in Waterdeep. However, he asked that they first return to Cromm’s Hold and deal with the menace in the basement.

It was game session 22 of the Age of Worms campaign. The party elven scouts, Cam and Zebaum, crept into the lizardfolk territory for some recon and discovered the secret entrance into the lair. The elves returned to the party with the information and led the group inside. Once within, they encountered numerous lizardfolk and even an assassin vine, which tried to consume Morak Beardfist.

The team fought and killed Redeye’s lieutenant, Kotabas, a barbarian lizardfolk tainted with dragon blood. Kotabas fought bravely but was no match for the party’s might. The best the barbarian could muster was attempting to carve his name in Thoril’s hide, an endeavor the raging creature made fairly good headway on. Within the same room, the group found two of the missing soldiers and healed and freed them.

Moving into the next area, the group encountered Hishka, the shaman of the tribe. The shaman opted to speak instead of fight, inquiring if the group was from “Deep Water”. Taking this to refer to Waterdeep, the group said no but proceeded to strike a deal with Hishka. The shaman would release Marzena and promise safe passage out of the lizardfolk lair and end the raids upon the surrounding lands if the party would defeat the leader of the tribe. They discovered the leader to be a wicked follower of Talos the Destroyer named Redeye (as they suspected). However, this lizardfolk was not a lich. Instead, he was a powerful warrior who has been goaded into striking out against the civilized lands due to the influence of a dragon named Ilthane. Ilthane had struck a deal with the lizardfolk to help protect their eggs, and in a show of good faith, left a dragon egg with them in the same chamber.

The party attacked Redeye and viciously took down the king of the lizards and claimed his magical redeye and trident. The game ended as the party stood over his slain corpse. Now, the group must gather up the dragon egg (the other part of their bargain with Hishka), get Marzena, and return to Cromm’s Hold after trekking back through the Lizard Marsh.

This was game session 21 of Age of Worms. After defeating the lizardfolk besieging Cromm’s Hold in the last session, the party teamed up with the elven tracker Zebaum Whitefeather. Together they headed into the Lizard Marsh in search of Marzena and the other captured soldiers.

Progress was slow but steady. During the first evening camp, the group was attacked by a huge monstrous hunting spider. It crept right up on the party, but their guard dog noticed it and barked loudly. The spider bit Valgen twice, injecting him with enough venom to paralyze him for days. While the party peppered the spider with arrows, Lyrin launched a lesser fire orb in its face. Injured from the flame, the spider attacked Lyrin. Bravely, Brutus attacked the spider and was horribly bitten for his troubles. A crippling dose of poison flowed through his limbs, but his orcish might still proved sufficient to split the spider’s head in two.

The team constructed a crude litter and loaded the paralyzed Valgen within and set off further into the swamp. Going was much slower dragging the hefty (and armored) warrior, but the trackers concluded they had not fallen more than a day behind the lizardfolk. Then, tragedy struck.

While following the tracks along the water’s edge, a submerged pack of ghouls led by a wicked ghast burst forth and attacked. Lyrin and Brutus quickly succumbed to the ghouls’ paralysis. Brutus’ dog fled into the swamp, and a ghoul attacked Valgen, not realizing he was completely helpless as well. Zebaum and Cam bravely held the line and fought back-to-back against the ravenous undead. While the ghast attempted to toy with them, a pair of ghouls began ripping Brutus apart and feasting on his corpse. Although horrific, it did buy the party time to regroup and destroy the flesh-eating undead. After the battle, the healers determined Zebaum and Lyrin had contracted ghoul fever.

The party searched the undead corpses, finding a large amount of Waterdhavian gold coinage as well as a perpetual talisman of cure light wounds, which greatly augments the group’s healing capabilities. After stripping Brutus’ remains, the ghouls, the ghast, and the slain half-orc were piled up and burned to prevent their return from the grave.

Mourning their fallen, the party moved on. The following morning, Zebaum’s magic restored Valgen to some mobility, although the spider’s poison still saps his strength. Unfortunately, the first signs of ghoul fever–festering reeking black patches of rotting flesh–have appeared on Zebaum and Lyrin, making them sluggish and weak. Undaunted, the group pressed on after the prize. Cam and Zebaum called the group to a halt and pointed out a raised mound ahead covered in intertwined cypress trees. Tracks in the mud indicate frequent patrols, and the party believes it has found either a waypoint or the lair of the lizardfolk.

Taking the side of prudence, the party decided to fall back into the swamp and cover their tracks. They await the arrival of their rear guard, including their dwarven priest and his dwarven friend, a renowned warrior. The team seeks to treat their sick and restore some strength to their comrades before taking on the lizardfolk menace.

A Riddle

What has eight eyes and is dead all over? One of these. “These” happen to be a sneak peek at one of the miniatures from the next Wizards of the Coast miniatures set, a beholder lich. Yipes!

Time Management

Wizards of the Coast has a new article on time management with some new ideas I had not really thought a lot about. Some of the stuff is the obvious that makes the list every time. It is an interesting article to look over.

Tuesday kicked off our Open Table gaming experiment. This month’s game was a d20 conversion of Mattel’s Masters of the Universe. We used HeroScape tiles to create a battlefield and Castle Greyskull. The players controlled He-Man, Fisto, Ram-Man, and Zodak. The setup was simple; defend Castle Greyskull from Skeletor and his minions. If any of the Evil Warriors spent two full rounds within the walls of Greyskull, the game ends and Skeletor triumphs.

The party utilized a variety of terrain and equipment, including Sky Sleds, Laser Battlements, Blaster Battlements, barrier walls, and Castle Greyskull itself. In the end, Skeletor, along with Clawful, Stinkor, Whiplash, Trap Jaw, and Two-Bad, were vanquished and driven back across Eternia to Snake Mountain.

Wizards of the Coast is holding a question-a-day contest, giving away copies of the D&D Cartoon DVDs. All you have to do is answer their trivia questions each day (be sure to look at the rules to make sure you submit all the information required).

Question 2 (today’s) is easy. However, ‘ware question 1, it’s a tough one. If you look in the wrong version of the adventure to which it refers, you won’t find the answers you seek!
