Chronoshift: Spelljammer — Game Session — 043

Game summary for May 9, 2023, Chronoshift: Spelljammer campaign, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Phoenix Gaming Club. Session included: Hekera Nephera Mawhesk Vyk’sebekenka (Sebek-ka Fighter played by Preston Harmon), Helg Ingvar (Aasimar Cleric played by Chris Harmon), Khesen Pavel (Human Brawler played by Parker Harmon), Komorebi (Kitsune Bard played by Josh Jenkins), and Stanley (Tieflng Sorcerer played by Peyton Harmon). Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

Komorebi used his mnemonic vestment to utilize this scroll of cure serious wounds and recover from many of his wounds.  His adversary decided he’d had enough and tried to flee but was run down by Hekera.  Khesen laid out the other ogre in an impressive flurry of face punches.  Stanley unleashed a barrage of shocking spark spells to zap the gnoll and take out the freelance thief.  Khesen was able to knock out the gnoll, and the team restrained her.

The team dragged the outside bodies into the building and searched the corpses and area.  They found a series of drafts of ransom notes and learned a shocking couple of facts:  1) Joey is really Josephine, and 2) she is the illegitimate daughter of Prince Andru! They located the girl in a storeroom below the building and began questioning her.  In the discussion, they informed the young child of her father’s identity and quickly realized she had no idea.  They dumped all the bodies in the storeroom and fled with Joey back to The Laughing Beholder.

Talking with Large Luigi, they learned Joey really is the Prince’s daughter but that Luigi is hiding her for her safety.  There is concern her life may be in danger due to the Prince’s reputation.  With others knowing about this, such as Boris, she is no longer safe on Bral.  The team offered to call in their favor with the Wa embassy and get the girl into exile with Needle on Toril.  In exchange, Luigi offered to owe them a favor.  He also went to the tent peg shop and disintegrated the bodies within to avoid legal entanglements.

The group then went to their rooms to rest a bit before going to talk to the Wa embassy.

Chronoshift: Spelljammer — Game Session — 042

Game summary for May 2, 2023, Chronoshift: Spelljammer campaign, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Phoenix Gaming Club. Session included: Edonna Match Wushu Lu Klighke (Dragonborn Oracle played by Casey Scruggs), Hekera Nephera Mawhesk Vyk’sebekenka (Sebek-ka Fighter played by Preston Harmon), Helg Ingvar (Aasimar Cleric played by Chris Harmon), Jiraiya (Hurwaeti Freebooter played by Andrew Renfrow), Khesen Pavel (Human Brawler played by Parker Harmon), Komorebi (Kitsune Bard played by Josh Jenkins), and Stanley (Tieflng Sorcerer played by Peyton Harmon). Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

Sturion returned after arranging a meeting with the party and one of Bral’s Underbarons, the Juggler.  They went to an old warehouse to talk with her.  They agreed to do her a favor “soon” (she indicated she would call in whatever it is soon before they depart from Bral) in exchange for information.  The Juggler gave them information about how the court system works on Bral and some advice on ways to improve Neko’s chances for a more positive outcome.  She also hinted about bringing in the gnoll that attacked them so the public has someone else to blame for some of the guilt of the fire.  Finally, she let them know the gnoll and her press gang were working for a pirate named Boris “the Butcher” Steelbeard, a relatively new criminal player on Bral.  He “recruits” pirate crews by kidnapping travelers.  Although he is currently away from Bral, his team is operating out of a place called Torvey’s Tent Pegs.

The group returned to the Laughing Beholder to inform Luigi and then went to investigate Torvey’s hoping to find either the gnoll or Joey, or both.  Edonna crept up close and cast detect thoughts and learned of several people inside playing cards, including an ogre!  The group devised a fairly solid plan and cloaked everyone except Helg with invisibility.  Helg then beat on the door.  A man inside called out asking what he wanted.  Helg then began spewing some nonsense, which at first the man believed.  Confused, he began discussing with the other occupants and caused some squabbling.  The man opened a port hole in the door and talked to Helg more, but as he provided more details, the man began realizing things were not adding up at all.  The man slammed the porthole (and slid the bolt to unlock the door so the party could come meet the resistance).  Inside, the foes started spelling up and preparing to slip out a secret back door and ambush the party.

The group threw open the door to come in.  A ja noi oni priest cast spiritual weapon while an ogre mancatcher, and a freebooter slipped out the secret door.  Jiraiya saw them and began waiving frantically in warning while Khesen charged through powered by Komo’s inspire courage and Edonna’s haste.  Stanley (still invisible) slid up behind Jiraiya and caressed him with a spell, whispering “you’ll be rock hard, baby all night.” Yeah, he cast stoneskin.  Helg went in to put pressure on the gnoll spellcaster, and she was only able to fire off an obscuring mist

Jiraiya then charged into the fray through the fog!  One of the ogres hacked a gaping wound into Helg and then whipped him to the ground.  Out the back, Khesen took out the ja noi oni while a freebooter and another ogre came rushing around the building only to run into Hekera, Komo, and Edonna.  The other freebooter flanked Helg while Komo hit the outdoor foes with blistering invective which demoralized them and caught the ogre on fire!  The horrific sight of a towering burning ogre became even worse when the nearly panicked creature used its hook to snatch Komo, fling him to the ground, and stomp him nearly unconscious.  The freebooter took a hit from Komo in exchange for better positioning where he then used sneak attack and inflicted a nasty bleeding wound.

Stanley, still invisible, sneaked into the building and tried to protect Helg by casting shield.  However, shield is a personal-only spell, so he just protected himself.  Helg then stood up and discovered the sad fact the ogre has Combat Reflexes.  Between the ogre and the freebooter, Helg didn’t have a chance and was murdered by their assault!

Outside, Hekera killed the burning ogre mancatcher.  Will Komo survive his severed arteries?  Will the team be able to resurrect Helg?  Can they take the gnoll spellcaster alive?  Is Joey somewhere in the building?

Chronoshift: Spelljammer — Game Session — 041

Game summary for April 25, 2023, Chronoshift: Spelljammer campaign, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Phoenix Gaming Club. Session included: Edonna Match Wushu Lu Klighke (Dragonborn Oracle played by Casey Scruggs), Hekera Nephera Mawhesk Vyk’sebekenka (Sebek-ka Fighter played by Preston Harmon), Helg Ingvar (Aasimar Cleric played by Chris Harmon), Jiraiya (Hurwaeti Freebooter played by Andrew Renfrow), Khesen Pavel (Human Brawler played by Parker Harmon), Komorebi (Kitsune Bard played by Josh Jenkins), and Neko (Half-Orc Magus played by Peyton Harmon). Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

Neko ran across the flagstones and hurled himself into a pond, which reacted to the alchemical reagents dousing his body and burned even brighter!  The rest of the team began organizing the citizens into a bucket brigade.  Helg healed several people and then went into the flames to begin dousing with create water.  Komorebi inspired the old man to greatness and hauled him through the flames to safety.  Finally, Neko’s flames went out.  Meanwhile, Gamalon Idogyr appeared via a teleport and cast a summoning to bring in a huge water elemental to fight the flames.

The City Watch also arrived and began questioning people.  They separated the party and interrogated them one-on-one while clerics came in and used speak with dead on the corpses.  After gathering all the information they could, they arrested Neko with the charge of arson!  He was taken into custody and taken to jail to await trial in three days.  The rest of the team tried to do a bit of damage control, and Edonna even gave a divination reading to a pregnant citizen regarding her child.

Back at the Laughing Beholder, they recounted their woes to Large Luigi.  They all realized Joey was missing, and Sturion went off to find some people who could have information.  In the meantime, Edonna cast a scrying and was able to see Joey, huddled and crying, in a dim storage area.  After debating, Edonna and the party came to the conclusion that it is unlikely a moving ship, but it is possible it is a docked ship.

The group now needs to find and rescue Joey and also come up with a plan for a legal defense, or perhaps some kind of bribe, to get Neko out of his troubles!

Chronoshift: Spelljammer — Game Session — 040

Game summary for April 11, 2023, Chronoshift: Spelljammer campaign, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Phoenix Gaming Club. Session included: Edonna Match Wushu Lu Klighke (Dragonborn Oracle played by Casey Scruggs), Hekera Nephera Mawhesk Vyk’sebekenka (Sebek-ka Fighter played by Preston Harmon), Helg Ingvar (Aasimar Cleric played by Chris Harmon), Khesen Pavel (Human Brawler played by Parker Harmon), Komorebi (Kitsune Bard played by Josh Jenkins), and Neko (Half-Orc Magus played by Peyton Harmon). Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

Surrounded, the team exploded into action.  Khesen leapt from the ground up onto a balcony and kicked a shocked gnoll archer right in the snout.  The silver-furred gnoll cast hold person with no effect.  Neko targeted a group of assailants, and while his team yelled for him to stop, he launched a fireball into the middle of a residential street in the center of Bral.  The wooden-framed house burst into flame under the intense sudden heat, with fire spreading across the roof, walls, and across the curtains exposed by the open window.

The enemies charged in and landed some devastating blows on the flat-footed party.  Edonna cast prayer and gave power to her team and diminished her opponents.  Helg cast a mighty dweomer, righteous wrath of the faithful!  Hekera tore into the enemies who had surrounded and injured him.  Komorebi chastised two enemies with a blistering invective and then used his singing steel armor to swiftly activate a dirge of doom that sent some of the enemy, on fire, scattering.  The archer in the building fired a deadly shot at Khesen who swatted it away like a gnat.  Meanwhile, the orc mystic caught a couple of the team in the confines of a web spell.

Enemies fell left and right, one literally from a balcony.  The team slaughtered their assailants while the home continued to burn, and an elderly man appeared on the balcony screaming for aid for him and his wife.  One of the burning brigands fled through the streets, magically terrified of Komorebi.  The silver-furred gnoll cast blindness at Khesen but failed to affect him. She then began to move toward a retreat position.  Khesen in turn ran along the roof and dove down to the street to pursue.

Most of the team shifted focus to saving the elderly people in the home.  Helg drenched the man and balcony with create water.  The silver-furred gnoll cast an obscuring mist to cover her retreat but was pursued closely by Khesen and Hekera.  The mighty sebek-ka nearly got his jaws on her, as a command spell sent Khesen running off in the wrong direction!  The gnoll was too quick for the ponderous reptile-man and began outpacing him.  Komorebi stepped up and encouraged his teammates with inspired courage, reciting a motivating oration:

Stand tall, brave hearts, and do not cower,

For danger strikes in every hour.

This alleyway may seem a trap,

But we can rise and break the snap.

We are the ones who dare to seek,

Our courage strong, our wills unique.

“Damn you, Joey, for this plight,

But we’ll fight on with all our might.

Moments later, Helg and Komorebi entered the burning home to rescue the people.  Neko had pulled out a tangleburn bag, and rather than carry it into the burning building decided to drop it.  At his feet.  Where it exploded, just like a tangleburn bag, and entangled and immolated him.  Helg carried the elderly woman out of the house and sat her down by the warm light of a burning Neko.  Several of the townsfolk began to emerge from their homes, and one walked smack into the magical webs.  He panicked and began screaming about giant spiders.  Others began to take up the cry, and in moments screams of warning about giant spiders were echoing through the entire neighborhood.

Hekera was hoping to put an arrow or two into the back of the fleeing gnoll, but she turned down a cross street before he could get situated.  The house fire continued to blaze as Komorebi went out to calm the man.  Edonna was able to magically calm several of the townsfolk, but the cries of “fire” and “giant spiders” were echoing off in the distance.  Concerned citizens could be seen coming out of homes and running down the roads toward the scene.

The team got up their first morning in Bral, had breakfast, and heading out with Joey to meet Cap’n Gyudd.  The old peg-legged dwarf told them it would take a week or two of work to top out the Perry after their audience with the elves.  They asked him about any rumors or interesting goings-on, and he told them he keeps hearing about some undead covered in green worms.  They chatted a while and then heading to find a guide to Selune.

They sent Joey off to find some assistance, and he returned a while later with a priest wearing voluminous robes and a featureless mirror mask.  The priest (or priestess) told them a bit about Selune and was interested in helping Faylen return; however, it warned them not to take any Torilians there.  With two Toril natives in the party, and two more on the ship, they realized they had a problem.  So, they put a pin in returning Faylen and went to talk to Needle about where he needed to go.

Needle warned them that most inhabitants of Toril know nothing about spelljamming, and it would be very wise to not be seen by many (or any) coming out of the sky in a ship.  He suggested they go at night and drop them in a clearing.  They agreed and headed out on the 1.25 hour voyage.  While flying over Toril, Needle pointed out places of interest such as the city of Waterdeep along the coast.  They then passed to the dark side of the planet and were guided to a clearing in Wa.  Before departing, he gave them a token good for a favor from the Wa embassy in Bral.

They returned to Bral and decided to talk again to the Leiran priest.  They agreed to leave their Torilian compatriots behind while the rest head to the moon.  The Leiran spoke with Faylen a while and then cast a sending.  Meanwhile, Komorebi returned to the Laughing Beholder and spoke a while with Daiyu.  He learned she is from Kara-Tur and seemed to understand his inability to return to his home in the Feywild.

The Perry landed on Selune, and Faylen’s little brother, now over 500 years old, met them!  He was overjoyed to be reunited with his sister who was lost to him over four centuries earlier.  This elf, Borlen, is a merchant and offered a great discount on trade goods as his appreciation to the party.  They then headed toward the Leiran temple to magically restore her arm.

With their two errands completed, the group reconvened at the Laughing Beholder and decided to go to the ship and talk to First Mate Flick.  They put him in charge of hiring two more gnomish crewmen and acquiring another giant space hamster.  Overjoyed, Flick began debating what kind of space hamster to get.  The party seemed to reject most of the ideas in spite of his excitement and recounting the virtues of a more exotic hamster.  They reiterated what they sought and sent him off.  They decided to seek a new weapon master for the crew, perhaps one who can cook.  They are entertaining the idea of conducting interviews.

On the way back to the tavern that evening, several armed figured emerged to surround them.  A mix of humans and gnolls confronted them along with at least one orc.  The orc whispered something about them being “as the boy said”, and the gnoll told them they needed crew and the party looked like crew.  It also snarled that it hopes they resist.

Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

The group, led by Helg, interrogated the captured ninja and made a deal with him for information in exchange for his life.  They learned the Hand is seeking to prevent Botticelli from getting to Toril and becoming the hero of legend.  Their master, the Ripper, sent them using scrying to locate the tortle.  They had infiltrated the crew of the Ambrosia and manipulated an encounter with the Perry.  The team put Needle in charge of their “guest” and put him to work in the hamster wheel providing power for the ship.

They arrived at Bral without incident a few days later and docked.  While Flick took care of the fees and cargo, the team set out to get a lay of the land.  They came across a boy handing out flyers for a local tavern, The Laughing Beholder.  The young man offered to help them with any errands they need.  Komorebi felt the boy was hiding something but still trusted him.  They paid him to take them to the elven embassy in the Elven Forest.  Once there they tried to convince the elves to give them an audience with Admiral Marianon Silmara.  After much negotiation they were able to arrange a meeting in five days.

The group then went to the Laughing Beholder.  They were astonished to meet Large Luigi, a purple beholder bartender!  They also met the bar swain Colin Longshire, bouncer Sturion Anvilfist, cook Ma Ironkettle, and singer and bar wench Daiyu.  They talked to the beholder a while and sampled the excellent food and glasses of Thayan red wine.

The group went back to the Perry and checked on the crew and Needle and Botticelli.  While at the docks, Komorebi noticed someone who looked at him strangely and melted back into the shadows.  He talked to one of the guards and learned the various factions employ people to watch the docks and report back on people they see.

After that, they returned to the Laughing Beholder and secured rooms.  Edonna used her seer abilities to get a read on Komorebi and Daiyu and told him he needed to find out more about her.

Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

While traveling through Realmspace, they crossed paths with a fish-shaped tradesman ship named the Ambrosia.  A grommam crewman used semaphore to offer peaceful trade, and the team agreed to talk.  They met with a fine Krynnish minotaur merchant named Bovus Brangus.  After some discussion they agreed to trade with him, and they exchanged numerous large baskets of goods.

The group continued traveling and were stopped by a large sargasso sea spreading out before them.  In moments, several void shambling mounds clambered aboard and attacked!  The group began chopping and burning and defeated them pretty quickly.  Edonna discovered a very valuable necklace tangled in the branches of one.

A few days later while Helg was on watch, four ninja of the Hand clan emerged from hidden spaces in some of the cargo from the Ambrosia and attacked!  They tried to knock him out, but he was able to channel positive energy and keep himself in the fight while screaming out for help.  Khesen and Hekera (on the upper deck) heard the calls first and woke up.  The ninja spread out and tried to kill everyone topside.  With the element of surprise gone, they were far less effective.  Neko and Edonna woke up next and also came to join the fight.

For the second time in a few days, the team demonstrated great cooperative ability.  They used spells to assist one another, buff abilities, and take down foes while the melee team unleashed their wrath.  Three of the ninja died fighting a brave but pitched battle.  The ninja magus was rendered unconscious and dying, and the group stripped him of his gear, bound him, and stabilized his wounds so they can interrogate him.

Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

The party rescued a Flow survivor drifting through their air envelope.  The young human man appeared to be playing a hurdy-gurdy.  As he came conscious, he was singing a ballad and suddenly realized he was surrounded by a strange cast of characters.  They made introductions and learned he is a bard out of Realmspace whose ship was recently mysteriously lost in the Phlogiston.  He hitched a ride with the crew for the time being.

As they approached Realmspace, the ship’s gnomish engine experienced a “functional event” in that it was no longer functional and about to explode!  The group desperately tried to fix it, causes several concussive blasts to rip through the ship.  They lost one of their giant space hamsters in the blasts, and the team had to take turns running in the hamster wheels themselves!

Once in Realmspace, the team was approached by a mated pair of turtle-sharks!  One snatched up Hekera in its jaws, and the other snatched up Khesen!  Jiraiya unleashed volleys of arrows while Zzyym fired magic missiles.  Ruby dimension door’d up onto the deck, and Scraggy rushed up and fired his double-barrel pistol.  Unfortunately, the gun misfired one barrel.  Nonplused, he fired the other!  The explosion sent shrapnel into him and several allies!

Helg put spiritual weapon to great effect while Neko rattled a turtle-shark with mind thrust.  Khesen was able to break his grapple and escape the maw, and Hekera got free when his attacker was slain.  Edonna and Komorebi enhanced the combat abilities of the team, and they all converged on the remaining turtle-shark.  Hekera used a potion of flying to zip over and engage the beast.  The group unleashed a rain of destruction, and Neko hit it with scorching ray.  Finally, Helg’s spiritual weapon slew the monstrosity!

Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

The team sailed back to Refuge and paid for a resurrection for Hekera but respected Intevar’s wishes to be laid to rest.  While at the Low Dive, they met a fortune-teller named Edonna who needed to get out of town quickly.  She joined the team, and the group set back out into Wildspace and then the Flow.  Along the way, the continued to train in ninjutsu with Master Needle.  During the trip, both Jiraiya and Khesen earned their red belts under his tutelage.

About a day out from Realmspace, they were attacked by a pair of void bonesuckers who grappled Faylen and pulled her off the ship.  The team quickly responded with Neko using mind thrust, Edonna casting haste, and the team scrambling into position.  The first bonesucker was killed pretty quickly while the group changed to ranged weapons and received a recitation from Edonna to further enhance their capabilities.  Faylen was screaming in pain in the tentacles of the bonesucker while the team fired arrows, magic missiles, and even leapt out into space to fight it!  Eventually, it was brought down by a blast from Edonna’s voidmote spell.  The group pulled Faylen back in and nursed their wounds.

Chronoshift: Spelljammer — Game Session — 034

Game summary for February 7, 2023, Chronoshift: Spelljammer campaign, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, for Phoenix Gaming Club. Session included: Hekera Nephera Mawhesk Vyk’sebekenka (Sebek-ka Fighter played by Preston Harmon), Intevar Dagella (Centurian Drow Silent Hunter played by Casey Scruggs), Jiraiya (Hurwaeti Freebooter played by Andrew Renfrow), Khesen Pavel (Human Brawler played by Parker Harmon), and Neko (Half-Orc Magus played by Peyton Harmon). Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons.

The party decided to head out from Refuge and continue their journey.  They debarked from Refuge and spent the next five days traversing Refugespace and training in ninjitsu with master Needle.  Sailmaster Tuk was able to locate a portal, and they soared back into the Phlogiston.  They spent three days in the Flow before a lifeboat came twirling through the air and slammed into their ship.  It broke up and spilled four corpses onto the deck.  The corpses, covered in writhing green worms, rose up and attacked!

The creatures unleashed a fear aura which terrified several members of the party and drove them into a fleeing panic.  The undead started flicking worms at the party, and the green critters started burrowing into the flesh of the party members.  This was not a problem for the characters in their right minds, but the panicked individuals were unable to remove the worms and began suffering damage from the burrowing monsters!  The team cut down one spawn of Kyuss quickly, but the others began healing their wounds and continued hurling worms.  Before long only Neko and Khesen were unafraid and fighting back.  Meanwhile, worms burrowed into the brains of Intevar and Hekera as the team cut down the remaining spawn!  Intevar died first.  Screaming.  Far more frightening was the sudden silence.  Moments later Hekera dropped dead as well.  As panic wore off, the party examined the bodies to find them twitching and filling with rapidly multiplying worms!  Unsure what to do, Khesen twisted Hekera’s head from his body, stopping his transformation!  Neko went below and decapitated Intevar’s twitching corpse.
