Game summary for April 13, 2021, Classic Quest campaign, Dungeons & Dragons BECMI / RC Edition, for Phoenix Gaming Club. Session included: Bathory Battleblade (Dwarf played by Preston Harmon), Garadal Davster (Halfling played by Parker Harmon), Gordi Alebarrell (Dwarf played by Andrew Renfrow), Katarina Magdanov (Magic-User played by Casey Scruggs), Koehan Rumisar (Elf played by Peyton Harmon), and Lodi Shatterhelm (Dwarf-Cleric played by Chris Harmon). Game Master for this session was Charles Plemons. This was a Roll20 session.

Koehan scaled the valley wall to check out the jackel-headed statue.  He reported back down to the team that he could see a trail winding up to the statue, so the team looked around and found the way up.  Gordi then climbed up the statue and pried two amethysts from its eye sockets. 

The group went into the werewolf lair and looked around.  Soon, they found an unlocked chest and were amazed to find a small fortune in coin and jewels within.  While enamored with their find, the werewolves surprised them from behind.  The wolves tore into the group.  The mother werewolf was driven off by a sprig of wolfsbane while Lodi grievously injured the son.  He realized only Lodi could hurt him, so he pounced the poor injured dwarf and ripped his throat out.  Bathory scooped up Lodi’s magical blade and killed the werewolf while the rest of the team finished off the rest of the wolf pack!

The group purchased passage on a barge heading back up the Volaga River toward the moorlands.  The debarked and found a campsite.  For three nights in a row, Katarina stood on one leg at midnight and whistled into the night.  On the third night, a half-horse half-man creature approached out of the darkness!  He spoke to the team and agreed to reveal the location of the Xitaqa ruins in exchange for two things.  One, the team must release their horses within the next 25 days.  Two, the team must bring him the heads of two werewolves in the region that keep killing his horses.  He marked the wolf den on the map, and the team set out to hunt them.

The team found the wolf lair right where the horse man directed them, and the climbed up over the cave entrance after watching the werewolves leave to hunt.  Up in the clearing above they were attacked by five angry wolves!  Several of the team were injured, but they defeated the wolves fairly quickly.  Overhead, they could see a canine-headed statue on a ridge.

The Hounds of the Iron Ring surged into the rooms and attacked the party in their beds!  Several of the team were badly stabbed before rallying to the defense.  Unarmored, the team was desperate to put down the enemies quickly.  A few early lucky shots broke the frontline assault and sent one of the assailants fleeing into the hallway.  Axes, blades, and arrows flew about and the team overwhelmed the Iron Ring! 

Soon there was one man remaining, and Katarina sang him a very convincing song about dropping his weapons.  So, he did.  He then decided outnumbered 6-to-1 with his friends all dead around him, it was worth jumping out the second story window to safety.  Unfortunately, he landed on his head and died. 

The team started putting on their armor, and a scream arose from outside.  Someone found the body!  Within moments, the constables arrived, and Katarina began speaking with them.  Soon an investigator arrived and took the party to a room one at a time to interrogate them.  Their stories matched pretty closely, and they could not dispute it appeared the party acted in self-defense.  The investigator declared he would not charge the party but would escort them to the city gates and warned them not to let him catch them back in town. 

After some discussion, the team decided to go along peacefully.

The team ransacked the goblin lair and discovered a secret door hiding a locked chest.  Within was a fortune in gold and gems!  The team then left the lair and found a secure campsite out in the woods where they nursed their wounds for several days.  They asked the old woman they rescued, Babushka, about what she learned while captive by the goblins.  She told them about other prisons, including a man named Stephan!  They were taken days ago to the ruins of Xitaqa by the hobgoblin Vlack.  The goblins believed “Ole’ Skinny-Legs” would be able to better interrogate the prisoners and find the location of the “great map” for which they are looking. 

The group returned to Sukiskyn, and the homesteaders agreed to take in Babushka.  The party asked the homesteaders if they knew the location of Xitaqa, and Kuzma told them they should ask the old “horse-man” of the moors.  The other homesteaders snickered at this, but she insisted he was old enough to know about the ruins.  She told them they could summon the horse-man by going to the moors and whistling at midnight for three nights in a row while standing on one foot.  The team decided to instead seek answers elsewhere and had the idea of going to see if there is a library or such in the city of Kelvin.  The team rested and saddled up to head there.  After a few days, the came to the great gates!

The team was allowed in after being warned that mage spells are strictly forbidden within the city at all times.  The went back to the Writhing Serpent tavern where their adventures all began.  They began asking all the locals about Xitaqa and the Iron Ring and got no answers.  However, they noticed a shady character (the waitress called him Rogo) slip out after eyeing the party for a while.  The group rented rooms, and in the middle of the night members of the Iron Ring burst in and attacked!

The team explored the goblin prison cell and found a frail old woman.  She begged to be taken out of the lair and then fainted from exhaustion and fear.  Katarina gently picked her up and began carrying her about as the team ransacked the lair. 

The group went across the hollow log to the last door.  On the other side they found a large number of massive giant ferrets!  The little buggers proved dangerous with vicious bites, but the team was a bit too tough for them.  The group went into another room, triggered a trap of falling branches, and were attacked by a trio of thouls!  The monsters drove the party back because the team was sorely injured from their previous encounters.  As they fell back, the kept raining ranged attacks and retreating swings until the took down the last of the creatures!

The group charged through the curtain and caught a room filled with goblins, the goblin king, and his bodyguards all off guard.  The team tore into the goblins with a fury before the humanoids could react.  Koehan and Katarina both hit the king with magic missile spells, and Lodi ran up and hammered him to death with his war hammer!  The goblins’ morale nearly broke at that, but the bodyguards rallied and fought back.  However, the team was well armored and defended with shield spells, so the goblins stood little chance.  In less than a minute, all the goblins were defeated, but the party could hear more approaching rapidly!  They barricaded the doors to buy some time and fought one group of goblins arriving from the south.  The team then decided to try and flank the other goblins by circling through the lair.  They and the goblins met in the middle with a bloody crash!  These goblins fared better in battle and dealt some serious blows to the party, but they too proved unable to defeat the team. 

From the darkness the team heard a weak voice cry out “Help me!”

The team withdrew from the lair and found a place to hide and heal.  A few days later they decided to parley with the goblins.  They talked to them and offered to trade several pieces of jewelry for Stephan.  The goblins ended up with both the jewelry and the prisoner and a barricaded lair. 

Gordi ended up discovering a trapdoor into the lair when he fell into the river.  The team used ropes and maneuvered their way out to the trapdoor.  The team got into the lair and found themselves behind a curtain in a room full of goblins!

With the first wave of goblins and wolves defeated, the team cast several cure light wounds spells and Gordi led the way back across the bridge.  He immediately ran face-first into a pair of dire wolves!  The wolves drove him back a bit on the bridge, but his allies came up and held the line with him.  Several were injured, but they defeated the wolves fairly quickly. 

They entered the lair and could hear growling and snarling in the distance.  Following the sound, they found several wolves tied to a tree straining their ropes trying to reach the team.  The group lined up to fire arrows at the wolves when they started snapping their tethers!  The snarling wolves were suddenly among the team with gnashing teeth and bloody paws!  The wolves badly injured the team, but the party was able to withstand the onslaught and bring down all the wolves under a hail of arrows and flurry of hammer and axe blows.

The team advanced upon the Wolfskull lair and found a petrified log laying over a muddy river.  Gordi tied himself to a petrified tree and crossed over the bridge into the lair.  Just inside the darkness he saw dire wolves and goblins, and they saw him!  He fled back across the log pursued by spear-throwing goblins and a wolf nipping at his heels! 

The team began firing arrows and bolts at the approaching mob.  One of the wolves was slain and fell into the water.  Moments later, piranha swarmed the carcass and frothed the waters!  The goblins grabbed hold of Gordi’s rope and dragged him into the water with the carnivorous fish.  Katarina sprang into action and dived onto the bridge.  She cut Gordi free and grabbed his cloak.  The waterlogged dwarf floundered in the water, but Katarina defied the odds and heaved him out of the water and onto the log to safety! 

The goblins surged forward and drove the team back.  The party unleashed magic missiles and shield spells and a barrage of arrows, stones, and bolts.  One at a time the goblins fell under the onslaught.  Eventually, only the team remained standing.

The team moved on from the patrol and surprised a larger group of goblins and wolves!  With the drop on the creatures, the party was able to take down a dire wolf almost immediately.  The sheer volume of goblins, however, proved a challenge.  The miniscule monsters swarmed in hurling spears and swinging axes.  The team took blow after blow, but they were able move about firing arrows, bolts, and sling stones to soften up the goblins.  The other dire wolf sank its fangs into several of the party, but it too was taken down.  The goblins surrounded some the team, but they were able to fight their way free.  After several minutes of running and fighting, the party was able to defeat the entire goblin patrol.
